What are stem cells?

How does stem cell treatment work?
Because stem cells are non-specialized, they can be used to treat different problems in different parts of the body. During the treatment, the doctor will place a specimen of a patient’s cells, usually taken from the fat in the buttocks, into a specialized machine called a centrifuge, which is designed to separate the cells, creating a sample of isolated stem cells for the doctor’s use in treating the patient. Once this is done, Dr. Ford will inject the patient’s stem cells into the area being treated. The pain during stem cell therapy is minimal. The side effects are also minimal, yet some patients may feel some soreness in the treated area for a few days following treatment. Patients can usually continue with their daily routine after their appointment. Dr. Ford will advise about which activities to avoid and when the patient needs to return for a follow-up visit.

Stem cell therapy vs PRP therapy
Stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are similar in what they can treat, but each therapy has a different mechanism for promoting healing. For example, PRP therapy uses something called “Growth factors” which are derived from the patient’s platelets in their blood. These growth factors then help by signaling stem cells to rebuild vital tissues needed during healing.
On the other hand, stem cell therapy utilizes the actual stem cells, which are directly applied or injected into an injured area. Once they are established in the tissue, they begin replicating and rebuilding that tissue.
